Motorhomes and campervans to be banned from popular seaside town for being 'too big'

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council will enforce new parking rules this autumn

Motorhome and campervan owners have been warned of new restrictions coming into force this autumn in a popular seaside town.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council revealed plans to introduce new parking rules for the larger vehicles, which will put a time limit on how long they can stay.

Under the proposals, parking for motorhomes will be restricted to existing marked parking bays on the north side of Marine Parade.

The bays will be restricted to parking times of only four hours between 9am to 5pm Monday and Saturday, with no return for four hours after the initial parking period.

Crucially, the rules will mean that there will be no parking for motorhomes at any time on the remaining unrestricted sections on the north and south sides of Marine Parade.

The larger vehicles will also be bound to “no waiting and no loading at any time” restrictions outside of Saltburn House to the back alley to Coral Street due to the width of the road.

The new measures will also limit the amount of time motorhomes can park in the region, although the council noted that there are no plans to introduce parking charges on Marine Parade.

Councillor Alec Brown said: “Saltburn is a much-loved destination, but it’s important that we strike a balance between meeting the needs of tourists who want to spend time by our beautiful coast, and residents who live here. We hope these changes mean everyone gets to enjoy the beauty Saltburn has to offer.”

Meanwhile, Councillor Carl Quartermain explained that the authority has been “working hard to come up with a solution that reflects the needs of residents and visitors, ensuring Saltburn remains enjoyable for everyone”.

Councillors Craig Hannaway, Stuart Smith and Philip Thomson shared in a joint statement: “We welcome these proposals from the Council. We are pleased that our original proposals have been recognised and incorporated.

“This is a good first step, subject to successful enforcement and our continuing involvement, with our remaining proposals on the table for future exploration.”

The need for additional enforcement measures follows complaints by residents who have warned that the larger vehicles have been blocking roads and dominating key parking options.

While the changes aim to address the parking problem, not everyone in the region is satisfied with the measures.

Taking to Facebook, one resident shared: “Maybe the council should look at setting up a proper campsite for motorhomes and campervans, as close to Saltburn as possible.

“If it were set up with facilities and charged for them, surely that would solve the problem. But also provide a park and ride service from the site into Saltburn centre.”

Another person warned that the move was “unclear” and failed to target the growing vehicle problem by still allowing them near popular areas.

The person shared: “This is somewhat unclear. This still allows for campervans to use Marine Parade for overnight accommodation, right? That will keep the restaurants and bars happy, I guess. No indications about how the four-hour limit will be monitored.

“There would certainly need to be a ‘free’ ticket machine that chugs out a ticket showing a date stamp. On the whole, it is good that some efforts to create a bit of balance in the town are being made.”

Another concerned resident stated that the move risks isolating the popular vehicles away from the area by being “always treated differently”.

They said: “Seems to me as if people are jealous that people can afford these luxuries and are trying to stop them from parking in areas with ‘views’. Don’t see why the council must ban these motorhomes from being too big in the local area when they have the same right as everyone else.”
