Driving law changes could see parking costs surge for owners of popular vehicles

Emission-Based Parking Fees for Gasoline and Diesel Vehicles

The local council has already adopted a policy where parking fees are determined by the emissions of petrol and diesel vehicles.

Investigating the Impact of Larger Vehicles on Safety

Lambeth Council in South London is considering an investigation into the potential risks that larger vehicles, such as SUVs, pose to pedestrians and cyclists. This could lead to parking charges that are based on the weight of the vehicle. The council plans to conduct a study to explore the correlation between the size of a vehicle and the safety hazards on the road.

Alongside Lambeth, two other inner London boroughs have been invited to join the study amidst increasing demands for local governments to take action. If these changes are implemented, Lambeth could be the first UK council to introduce a weight-based parking surcharge system, following the example set by Paris.

There is a growing concern about the environmental and safety impacts of larger vehicles. This prompted Lambeth Council’s decision following a presentation by local children and parents at a recent meeting, where they voiced their concerns about the prevalence of SUVs in the area.

An eight-year-old local resident, Dotty, expressed her concerns at the meeting, pointing out the environmental harm caused by large vehicles which consume more energy than smaller cars. She highlighted how these large vehicles contribute to traffic congestion and exacerbate conditions like asthma among her peers.

There have also been numerous complaints about the challenges of fitting large SUVs into roadside parking spaces. Some children pointed out the visibility issues posed by high SUV bonnets, which can obstruct the driver’s view of young children walking in front of these vehicles.

Meredith Robertson, who led the delegation of parents and children, stressed the increasing number of SUVs, noting that they constituted 62% of new car sales in the UK last year. She expressed concerns about the shrinking space available for children as these large vehicles become more common.

Rezina Chowdhury, Deputy Leader of the Council, responded to these concerns, affirming the council’s commitment to action based on equity and justice, aimed at protecting vulnerable residents.

Chowdhury further explained that the council’s goal is to allocate at least 25% of kerbside space for people rather than vehicles, with parking fees reflecting this priority. She noted the unfairness of public spaces being dominated by large vehicles, which often prevent others from finding parking spaces.

The council will look into methods already in place in cities like Paris and Cologne, and consider measures similar to those proposed by Haringey, which includes parking permit surcharges based on vehicle size.

Lambeth is already enforcing parking permit charges based on vehicle emissions, with higher fees for diesel vehicles. Chowdhury announced plans to commission a study, in partnership with two other inner London boroughs, to better understand the relationship between vehicle dimensions and road safety.

Research in the UK has shown that SUVs are more likely to cause fatal accidents involving children under ten, due to their weight and height.
