Urgent Appeal to Cornwall Council to Revise Parking Regulations for Large Vehicles
In a recent development, Cornwall Council is facing strong recommendations to amend its overnight parking regulations to better accommodate larger vehicles such as motorhomes and campervans.
Parking Regulations Under Scrutiny
A popular tourist destination has come under fire for issuing parking fines to unoccupied motorhomes and campervans. The local government has been advised to make it possible for these larger vehicles to use parking facilities throughout the area without the necessity of staying overnight.
This situation came to light when a local resident was hit with a £70 fine after parking his motorhome in a public car park overnight, unaware of the existing overnight parking restrictions, even though he had purchased a valid parking ticket. The resident contended that since the vehicle was only parked and not used for overnight accommodation, the fine should be invalidated.
Furthermore, last year, Cornwall introduced a designated overnight parking area exclusively for motorhomes, responding to the increasing popularity of these vehicles. This site was created to manage the demand effectively, but it was clarified that a general overnight parking ban from 11 PM to 8 AM would still apply in other public car parks, with fines being imposed on those who violate this rule.
Councillor Richard Williams-Pears stated previously, “We recognize the demand from the motorhome community for overnight facilities in our car parks. While we aim to accommodate these needs, we must also consider the implications for local communities and businesses. We hope that the trial in Bude will provide valuable insights that can be applied to other locations in the future.”
Despite these measures, there is an ongoing call for the council to allow locals to park their vehicles in these bays as long as they do not use them for sleeping overnight.
Local Reactions and Further Developments
The resident affected by the recent fine expressed his frustration, noting that he would now have to resort to street parking, which he finds absurd especially when car parks are mostly empty at night. “It would also generate additional revenue for the council,” he added.
In response to the growing discontent, Councillor Drew Creek suggested that a more sensible approach to motorhome enforcement might be necessary. This approach would prevent people from sleeping in their vehicles overnight while ensuring that local residents are not unfairly penalized.
He explained, “This issue is part of a broader parking problem in Newquay. We often see locals parking their campervans along Esplanade Road at South Fistral to catch an early morning surf, only to be fined by enforcement officers for alleged overnight sleeping, which isn’t the case.”
The council is being urged to adopt a more pragmatic stance on this issue and ensure that locals who own campervans have a designated place to park. Meanwhile, opinions on social media have been mixed, with some users expressing surprise at the strict overnight parking rules enforced by Cornwall Council and others highlighting the negative behaviors of some van owners that lead to such restrictions.
One user remarked, “It’s crazy… what a way to drive people away. I thought Dorset Council was tough with their high parking charges. Next year, it will either be street parking or I’ll go elsewhere.”
Another added, “Cornwall has never lacked tourists, and I presume the council doesn’t want semi-permanent encampments in their car parks. Unfortunately, some within the van community feel entitled to do as they please, and it is these individuals who bring about such restrictions.”
This ongoing debate highlights the complex balance that must be struck between accommodating the needs of motorhome owners and addressing the concerns of local residents and businesses.
