Labour has yet to announce a definitive list of vehicles that will qualify for the Electric Car Grant.
A prominent Chinese car maker has rolled out its own electric vehicle grant before Labour’s scheduled incentive plan, with vehicle prices being reduced to under £15,000.
Leapmotor UK announced that it would provide immediate savings of up to £3,750 with the introduction of the LEAP-GRANT starting today, July 18.
This announcement comes shortly after Labour disclosed their plan to initiate a new incentive scheme to aid motorists in reducing the cost of new electric vehicles priced below £37,000.
The Electric Car Grant marks the first government-supported incentive for purchasing new electric cars since the termination of the Plug-in Car Grant in 2022.

The SUV boasts 218hp, can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 7.5 seconds, and has rapid charging capabilities that can recharge the battery from 30 to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.
Additionally, a Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) plan is available at £319 per month with a £319 deposit on zero percent APR.
UPDATE: Labour plans to exclude Chinese car brands from a £650m electric vehicle grant following a stern warning from Beijing
Damien Dally, managing director of Leapmotor UK, stated that the brand’s primary goal is to make transitioning to electric vehicles easier for British drivers.
He emphasized: “We’ve decided to act now to offer our customers transparency, confidence, and immediate savings – making the switch to electric a straightforward decision.”

All Leapmotor vehicles come with a comprehensive four-year warranty, with the batteries covered by an additional eight-year guarantee.
Leapmotor stated that it was motivated to launch the scheme as the Government was still determining which vehicles would qualify for the grant.
In a statement to BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood mentioned that Chinese car brands would be ineligible for the grant scheme.
She attributed this decision to environmental concerns related to the sourcing of materials, although the Chinese conglomerate BYD has expressed its intention to apply for the Electric Car Grant on behalf of its customers.
