Significant Adjustments Recommended for Drivers with Upcoming License Plate Updates
Authorities are advising motorists to prepare for substantial changes with the introduction of new license plates.
As the United Kingdom gears up for the introduction of new license plate formats, experts are highlighting the need for drivers to implement considerable savings strategies in the forthcoming weeks. Starting from September 1, new license plate identifiers will be implemented across England, Scotland, and Wales, marking the newest vehicles at dealerships.
This alteration will see vehicles registered post-September 1 featuring a “75” tag, marking the second major update of the year after the “25” tag introduced in March. September is traditionally a peak month for purchasing new or used cars, as older models depreciate in value, and consumers look to acquire the latest models.
Bill Fennell of The Motor Ombudsman is urging motorists to conduct thorough research before visiting dealerships. This research should help them understand exactly what they need. With the rising popularity of electric vehicles, it presents an opportunity for drivers to consider more sustainable options. However, many may choose to continue using petrol or diesel vehicles or opt for a dependable hybrid model.
Fennell also pointed to the new Electric Car Grant introduced by Labour, which offers up to £3,750 off the price of a new electric vehicle (EV) costing £37,000 or less. This initiative, along with various dealership offers such as free charging and home EV charger installations, could significantly reduce the financial burden on motorists. Labour continues to update its list of eligible vehicles, potentially saving buyers up to £1,500 on new models from manufacturers like VW, Vauxhall, Nissan, and Citroen.
Despite these incentives, Fennell warned that owning a new car might come with unforeseen expenses. He advised potential buyers to calculate ownership costs using tools like spreadsheets or online calculators to get a realistic estimate from the start. Costs such as road tax, insurance, fuel, charging, and maintenance can add up, potentially increasing once initial free services like annual servicing expire and vehicles require MOTs after three years.
Fennell also emphasized the importance of test-driving to ensure the vehicle fits the driver’s needs and feels right before making a purchase. He suggested bringing commonly used items such as car seats, buggies, or golf clubs during test drives to check for compatibility with daily routines.
He concluded by advising drivers not to feel pressured by discounts and offers, reminding them that a car purchase is usually a commitment of several years, impacting household budgets and monthly expenses.
