Mila Kunis recently spoke about the rigorous efforts she put into her character for the movie Black Swan.
In a recent conversation with Vogue to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the 2010 movie, Kunis, alongside her co-star Natalie Portman and director Darren Aronofsky, revealed the transformation she underwent to embody a professional ballerina.
“My routine involved a lot of dancing and minimal eating. I know it’s not ideal to mention, but it’s the truth. I consumed a lot of broth and danced for about 12 hours every day,” she disclosed to the publication.
“We initially had three months to prepare before starting the shoot, but when the financing fell through temporarily, it was pushed to six months as Darren sought additional funding,” Kunis, aged 42, added. “It was tough for Darren, but Nat and I benefitted because it gave us three more months to hone our dancing.”
The actress from Luckiest Girl Alive also recounted the physical toll the numerous dance sequences took on her.
“We filmed those dance scenes for hours, and I ended up with bruises all over my ribs from being lifted repeatedly,” she shared with Vogue. “I also dislocated my shoulder early in production and thought my situation was dire, but Darren introduced me to an acupuncturist, and astonishingly, I recovered completely fine.”
During the interview, Portman, 44, shared an intriguing backstory of how Kunis was cast as Lily, the provocative rival to Portman’s character, Nina.
“We had been friends for a long time, and one day at the Rose Bowl Flea Market, we discussed the ballet film I was working on with Darren. When Mila mentioned her past experience with pointe shoes, I was surprised and immediately informed Darren. I told him we had an incredible actress with ballet experience who would be perfect for Lily,” Portman recounted to Vogue.
The catch? Portman might have overstated Kunis’ ballet experience a bit.
“I might have mentioned that I once danced, which somehow turned into me having extensive pointe experience,” Kunis remarked, prompting a response from Portman, “Perhaps I embellished a bit for you!”
Despite the initial budget constraints with a modest $13 million, the film grossed nearly $330 million globally. Portman received the Best Actress Oscar for her compelling performance.
Fans will have the opportunity to see the movie in theaters again this month. On August 21 and August 24, a newly remastered version of Black Swan will be showcased on IMAX screens nationwide.
Reflecting on the film’s 15th anniversary, Portman told Vogue that her first viewing of the completed film was “exhilarating”.
“I didn’t fully grasp the film’s tone while we were filming, and the final product was both shocking and exhilarating. It was a wonderful surprise. I hadn’t understood Darren’s full vision while we were shooting, and the film’s success was truly remarkable,” she expressed.
