Travel Alert for a North American Location Due to Recent Violence on Public Transit

Travelers heading to Mexico, specifically Baja California Sur, are being warned about the recent spike in cartel-related violence that has involved assaults on public transportation services starting April 24. The conflict is reportedly between competing cartels, as noted by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The violence has impacted several municipalities, including key tourist spots like Los Cabos, La Paz, and Mulegé.

The FCDO is advising British nationals in these areas to follow local authority directives closely.

Since the onset of these attacks, there has been a noticeable increase in violent incidents in the state of Baja California Sur.

Visitors who find themselves victims of a crime should report immediately to the nearest state prosecutor’s office, locally known as “Agencia del Ministerio Público”. It’s crucial to understand that criminal investigations can only commence if a formal complaint is filed with Mexican authorities. These complaints need to be lodged in person before departing Mexico.

For those in Mexico City, the Command and Control Centre can provide information and safety advice, though services are offered solely in Spanish.

In other travel-related updates, the FCDO has also issued a new travel advisory to Britons following a severe 6.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the Sea of Marmara, with significant tremors felt throughout Istanbul.

Parts of Turkey are prone to earthquakes, some of which can be of high magnitude and pose substantial threats to both life and infrastructure. The recent earthquake has led local authorities to issue safety precautions for residents and tourists in Istanbul and surrounding areas, warning of possible aftershocks.

The government office in Istanbul has confirmed that 151 people were treated for injuries resulting from panic-induced actions during the quake, though none of the injuries were fatal.
