A Dispute Over Birthday Cake Turns Bitter
A woman took to the popular Reddit forum “Am I the A——” to discuss a birthday cake disagreement she experienced with her boyfriend, a story she shared on Sunday, April 27.
The Request for a Specific Cake
The woman in question asked her boyfriend to purchase a carrot cake for her birthday, emphasizing it was her preferred flavor. Her boyfriend was initially reluctant about her choice, suggesting instead a flavor that was more universally liked. She explained that the gathering would be comprised solely of her friends who also enjoyed carrot cake.
Birthday Surprise: The Wrong Cake
On her birthday, her boyfriend picked up the cake from a bakery but didn’t communicate any issues to her beforehand. It wasn’t until the birthday song was underway and her boyfriend presented the cake that she discovered, much to her dismay, it was a chocolate cake. “I hate chocolate cake. It makes me sick. He KNOWS I hate chocolate cake,” she expressed in her post, adding that she “refused” to taste the cake but refrained from confronting her boyfriend during the celebration.
That evening, the couple had a conversation at home where her boyfriend criticized her behavior, accusing her of acting childishly. He continued to argue that carrot cake was generally disliked, branding her as spoiled and selfish for not partaking in the birthday cake. He justified his choice by claiming the bakery was out of carrot cake, a statement she doubted, pointing out he could have chosen any other flavor except the one she despised.
Reflection and Online Reactions
Following the incident, the woman acknowledged in her post that her boyfriend had put significant effort into organizing the party and that neither had apologized after their argument. She mentioned that upon reflection, she felt she might have overreacted by not just trying the cake. The post quickly went viral, amassing thousands of comments debating whether the original poster was in the wrong or not. The consensus among many was that she was not the a—— (NTA), as per the subreddit’s terminology.
One commenter noted, “This is not a good partner. I mean on the most basic level everyone knows that a birthday party is for the birthday person, and you should cater to their dessert preferences… like seriously, again, EVERYONE knows that.” Another suggested that the incident could reflect deeper issues within the relationship, advising, “Is cake on its face a small thing? Yes. But we are talking about his behavior here, not the cake. Take the cake out of the equation and address his actions, which, on that day, were less than honorable. IMHO you should take a look at other aspects of your relationship, and see if his behavior on your birthday was an odd one-off or part of a pattern, and go from there.”
