Aldi has revealed a slate of 160 towns and neighbourhoods it wants to target for new UK supermarkets, as the discount chain steps up a major growth push. The list, shaped in part by customer nominations, maps out where the retailer plans to hunt for sites and where shoppers may soon see new stores opening.

Big-budget expansion: what Aldi is investing and when

The company has set aside a large expansion fund this year. Aldi intends to open 40 new stores during the current 12 months as part of a wider investment programme worth £370 million. Its long-term aim is to expand the UK estate to around 1,500 branches.

How customers helped pick the new targets

In May, Aldi asked shoppers to nominate towns and local areas they’d like to see served by a discount supermarket. Those responses were then used to create the list of priority locations. The retailer says public input played a key role in deciding which communities to focus on.

Where Aldi is already actively searching and opening

The company is already looking for sites in around 25 of those priority areas. Cities and towns on its immediate search list include Newcastle, Leeds, Warwick and Bath.

A new outlet on Edgware Road in London is due to open on Thursday 6 August. Aldi has also earmarked £40 million specifically for the capital, to deliver eight new London branches before the end of 2026. The move is expected to create hundreds of jobs and broaden access to affordable groceries in parts of the city with fewer discount options.

Jobs and pay at the growing chain

Alongside new stores, Aldi highlights job creation and wage policy. The supermarket currently advertises itself as the UK’s highest-paying grocer for entry-level roles. National starting pay is set at £13.50 per hour, rising to £14.88 per hour for staff inside the M25.
