Alcohol and immunity: an uneasy mix
As the chill sets in and colds make the rounds, many of us instinctively shift into immune defence mode—more vitamins, better sleep, extra greens. But experts warn there’s one regular habit that may be sabotaging your system: alcohol.
From your Friday night glass of wine to weekend cocktails, even moderate alcohol intake can impact the body’s natural defences. According to registered dietitian Roxana Ehsani, alcohol is more disruptive to the immune system than most people realise. And it’s not just about overindulgence—even low levels can have noticeable effects.
Why alcohol disrupts your body’s defences
1. It dehydrates your system
One of the most immediate impacts of alcohol is dehydration. Alcohol is a natural diuretic, meaning it prompts the kidneys to release more fluids. This excess urination reduces your body’s hydration levels, which in turn slows down immune cell activity.
Hormonal disruption plays a key role here. Alcohol interferes with the production of vasopressin, a hormone that helps the kidneys retain water. Without it, your body loses more fluid than it should, weakening immune function and delaying the production of antibodies, explains immunologist Sonia Sharma from the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.

2. It damages your gut health
The gut microbiome is a major player in the immune system, and alcohol throws it off balance. “When you drink, the alcohol hits your gut first,” says Ehsani. It disrupts the helpful bacteria that keep your digestive tract (and immunity) in check.
This bacterial imbalance can compromise how well immune cells function, leaving your body more vulnerable to common viruses and infections.
3. It’s often packed with sugar
Many alcoholic drinks—especially cocktails—come loaded with sugar-laden syrups and juices. This combo not only spikes your blood sugar but also interferes with how your immune cells respond to threats.
When blood sugar levels soar, it can block the production and activity of white blood cells, leaving your immune system sluggish just when it should be on high alert.
4. It adds up quickly
Even if you’re not binge drinking, regular alcohol consumption can add up. Health guidelines recommend no more than two units per day, and not every day. Go beyond that, and your immune system starts to feel the strain—making you more susceptible to everything from seasonal bugs to long-term health risks like cancer or cardiovascular disease.
So, should you cut it out completely?
Not necessarily. As with most things, it’s about balance and moderation. If you’re serious about keeping your immune system sharp—especially during cold and flu season—it’s worth rethinking your alcohol habits.
Try swapping your usual tipple for herbal teas, infused waters, or low-sugar mocktails. Your body (and your immune cells) will thank you.
