• Users of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic have reported dental issues, dubbed “Ozempic teeth.”
  • This side effect encompasses dental problems such as decay, sensitivity, and loss of teeth associated with GLP-1 drugs.
  • Dental professionals point to dry mouth, vomiting, and decreased appetite as probable sources of these issues.
  • Maintaining dental hygiene is crucial for individuals on GLP-1 medication.

Terms like “Ozempic face” and “Ozempic butt” have been used to describe the physical changes such as hollow cheeks or a flattened rear end due to weight loss.

These physical transformations typically result from rapid loss of fat and occasionally muscle, which can make the skin appear looser and aged, especially on the face and buttocks.

Recently, a new concern known as “Ozempic teeth” has been reported by those using GLP-1 medications.

Catrize Austin, DDS, a cosmetic dentist, author, and podcast host, notes an increase in patients with unforeseen dental issues since the rise in use of drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy (semaglutide) for diabetes and weight management.

“Ozempic teeth,” though not a recognized medical term, describes the rapid development of dental decay, tooth sensitivity, and even tooth loss among these patients, according to Austin during an interview with Healthline.

She added that symptoms might include dry mouth, enamel wear, gum inflammation, and in severe instances, cracked or loose teeth.

Despite being anecdotal, these accounts are becoming well-known as more individuals discuss their dental issues on social media and in news outlets, Austin mentioned.

Austin also pointed out that Ozempic isn’t the only GLP-1 medication causing dental problems; other drugs in the same class can have similar effects.

These include medications such as tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), liraglutide (Saxenda, Victoza), dulaglutide (Trulicity), and exenatide (Byetta, Bydureon BCise).

Dental Health and GLP-1 Medications

Austin identifies several factors that likely contribute to oral health issues from Ozempic.

Dry Mouth

“A common issue among my patients on these drugs is a decrease in saliva production,” Austin explained. “Saliva plays a crucial role in neutralizing acids and protecting tooth enamel. A reduction can significantly increase the risk of decay and gum disease.”

Symptoms of dry mouth include feeling thirsty, difficulties in swallowing, a sticky mouth sensation, or having dry, cracked lips.

Nausea and Vomiting

According to FDA reports, nausea is experienced by 16-20% of patients on Ozempic, with 5-9% experiencing vomiting.

“Frequent contact with stomach acid can wear down enamel and increase tooth sensitivity,” she stated.

Poor Nutrition

“Appetite reduction to the point of nutritional deficiency can impact gum health and its ability to heal,” Austin remarked.

Essential nutrients for gum health include vitamins C, D, and the B complex.

Insufficient Oral Care

She also noted that some individuals might neglect regular oral care routines like brushing and flossing when feeling unwell, accelerating tooth decay.

For best results, it’s recommended to floss before brushing.

Protecting Your Teeth While on Ozempic

Ehsan Ali, MD, known as the “Beverly Hills Concierge Doctor,” supports Austin’s observations about GLP-1-related dental issues. He emphasized the broader implications for overall health.

“Poor dental health can lead to increased risks of infections, inflammation, and even heart disease,” he informed Healthline.

Nonetheless, there are simple practices that can offer protection.

“Staying hydrated is crucial,” Ali emphasized. “Drinking plenty of water helps prevent dry mouth.”

He suggested using mouth rinses that enhance saliva production or chewing sugar-free gum to keep the mouth moist.

Ali also advised not to skip meals, as nutrients like calcium and vitamin D are vital for dental health.

He recommended maintaining a balanced diet and not excessively reducing calorie intake; a healthy calorie deficit should be around 300-500 calories per day.

Regular brushing and flossing are essential, as well as avoiding acidic or sugary foods that can damage tooth enamel, according to Ali.

“If you have been vomiting, rinse your mouth with water and baking soda before brushing to neutralize stomach acid,” he advised.

Austin also suggested avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine, which can exacerbate dry mouth.

Consulting a Dentist or Doctor

As the use of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro increases for diabetes control and weight loss, awareness of potential dental issues is crucial.

While “Ozempic teeth” is not an official diagnosis, the rising number of cases involving dry mouth, enamel erosion, and tooth loss highlights a significant concern.

Simple measures can safeguard your dental health, such as staying hydrated, keeping up with oral hygiene, eating a diet rich in nutrients, and using products that support saliva production.

It’s vital to consult your healthcare provider if you experience ongoing nausea or vomiting or observe any changes in your dental health.

“If new sensitivity, bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or sudden changes like loose teeth or breakages occur, it’s time to contact your dentist,” Ali stated.

If nausea or vomiting is frequent, discussing it with your doctor is also advisable to possibly adjust your medication or add protective measures for your stomach, he added.

“Catching issues early makes them easier to manage and ideally prevent lasting damage,” Ali concluded.

The key takeaway? These medications can be highly beneficial for health, but proactive management of side effects is essential to prevent them from compromising your dental health.

Prevention and timely intervention remain critical for maintaining oral health.
