New Research Indicates Roadside Signage Changes Could Significantly Boost Retail

Recent findings have highlighted that UK businesses are poised to experience significant benefits due to recent legislative changes introduced by the Labour party. This includes a beneficial push for electric vehicles (EVs), with the government rolling out a new EV grant scheme that allows motorists to save up to £3,750 on vehicles priced under £37,000.
This £650 million initiative is complemented by an additional £63 million investment aimed at expanding the electric car charging infrastructure nationwide. This upgrade will feature new signs on major A-roads and motorways, directing drivers to nearby EV charging stations.
These developments are expected to not only facilitate easier travel for EV users but also open up new commercial avenues for retailers. According to data from EV charge point operator InstaVolt, the enhanced visibility and strategic retail partnerships could transform public charging into a lucrative business, greatly benefiting site hosts with increased foot traffic and revenue.
InstaVolt’s COO, Simon Smith, emphasized the dual benefits of the initiative, stating that better EV charging signage on major roads represents both a milestone in infrastructure and a significant catalyst for retail opportunities. He noted that with the right visibility and partnerships, public charging stations could provide substantial convenience for drivers and valuable patronage for businesses.
The research further suggests that EV drivers typically spend between 25 to 35 minutes at charging sites, offering a prime opportunity for retail engagement. A substantial majority of survey respondents (89%) indicated that physical signs directing them to charging stations are crucial, especially for instilling confidence in potential EV users about the available infrastructure.
Moreover, nearly three-quarters of EV drivers expressed their willingness to pay more for fast and convenient charging services provided at well-equipped sites.
The government’s commitment to enhancing EV infrastructure has been well-received by industry stakeholders, including InstaVolt and the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, following years of advocacy and dialogue. The number of EV charging hubs has significantly increased, with current figures from Zapmap showing over 82,369 charging devices across more than 40,000 locations in the UK.
Quentin Willson, founder of FairCharge, has expressed his satisfaction with the government’s decision to install charging signs, noting that this development helps debunk the myth of inadequate EV infrastructure and encourages more drivers to consider switching to electric vehicles.
As the UK continues to invest in clean energy solutions, the rollout of new signage on its roadways stands as a testament to the nation’s efforts to become a leading force in the sustainable transportation sector.
