Tragic Multi-National Fatalities in Yellowstone Area Crash

Recent updates from the authorities have shed light on the devastating incident that claimed seven lives following a collision between a tour van and a pickup truck. The crash took place on the evening of May 1st, shortly before 7:15 pm, on U.S. Highway 20 close to Henry’s Lake State Park, roughly 16 miles west of Yellowstone.
The Idaho State Police announced on May 16 that the victims were nationals from China, Italy, and the United States. The incident involved a van carrying 14 passengers and a solitary driver in the truck. The crash resulted in the deaths of six passengers from the van and the truck driver.
The ages of those who perished ranged from 28 to 71. The deceased have been identified as Ivana Wen, 28, from Milan, Italy; Jianping Li, 71, from Guangxi, China; Xiaoming Jiang, 66, from Guilin, China; Li Nie, 64, and Aifeng Wan, 53, both from Arcadia, California; Yu Zhang, 30, from Eastvale, California, who was driving the tour van; and Isaih Moreno, 25, from Humble, Texas, the truck driver.
Investigators have determined from preliminary evidence that the Dodge Ram pickup crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with the Mercedes van traveling in the opposite direction. The investigation into why the pickup crossed into the opposite lane is ongoing, involving crash reconstruction and further tests.
Idaho State Police Captain Chris Weadick expressed his gratitude towards a bystander who provided immediate help and to Sheriff Bart Quayle and his team from Fremont County for their prompt response, which he said undoubtedly helped save lives. He praised the collaborative efforts of local law enforcement and volunteer emergency services for their crucial roles in the aftermath of the accident.
“The complexities of this crash, involving multiple fatalities and international victims, have made this a particularly challenging case,” Captain Weadick stated. He thanked the public for their patience and understanding as the investigation progresses.
Witness Roger Merrill, who was driving home at the time, captured the immediate aftermath on video. The footage showed smoke billowing from the van with both vehicles engulfed in flames. He noted the highway’s danger, being a primary route to Yellowstone’s main entrance, and remarked on the slow response time due to the remote location.
Merrill commented on the inherent dangers of the busy highway leading to Yellowstone, highlighting the delayed arrival of emergency services due to the site’s remoteness.
