This development follows disclosures that authorities are considering prolonging the longstanding freeze despite economic critiques suggesting that an increase in fuel duty could aid in addressing financial deficits.
The existing suspension includes a temporary reduction of 5p per litre initiated in 2022, which has been successively extended for three years. Chancellor Rachel Reeves affirmed this continuation as a “significant commitment” in the previous year’s Autumn Budget, arguing that a tax increase would adversely impact working individuals amidst persistent high living costs.
Government Justification Amid Rising Inflation
Officials believe their strategy is warranted by the ongoing economic challenges faced by British families. The Treasury’s position is also influenced by recent data showing inflation reaching 3.6%, the highest in 18 months as reported by the Office for National Statistics. This is a notable rise from the 1.7% inflation rate noted when Reeves presented her budget last October.
However, this decision to maintain the freeze has attracted criticism from various think tanks, including the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS). Moreover, over 100 Labour MPs have joined the Living Standards Coalition, a new parliamentary group likely to exert pressure on the Chancellor to maintain the freeze. This coalition reflects growing concerns within Labour regarding household finances amidst escalating living costs. Sir Keir Starmer, addressing MPs, stated, “I am not going to write the Budget months out from the Budget.”
The Office for Budget Responsibility estimates that the fuel duty freeze will cost the Exchequer £3.015 billion in 2025-26, with ongoing costs of around £890 million annually until 2030. However, some economists in the city suggest that inflation could climb to four percent this autumn, further straining household budgets. The measure reportedly benefits an estimated 36 million individuals by preserving reduced fuel duty costs, according to government impact assessments.
