Upcoming M50 Motorway Closure for Maintenance Work
The section of the M50 motorway from junction 4 to the M5 junction 8 will be temporarily closed for repair work.
Extended Road Closures on Key Motorway for Essential Repairs
Motorists are being alerted about upcoming prolonged closures on a significant motorway throughout the year due to essential maintenance operations. The National Highways agency is commencing a major overhaul of the M50 in the West Midlands to enhance its resilience against flooding caused by heavy rains, which have previously led to considerable damage and delays.
Investigations into the motorway’s performance during adverse weather conditions revealed that the existing drainage systems were inadequate, failing to effectively manage water during heavy rainfall and resulting in significant flooding. The scheduled improvements include extensive cleaning, repair, and vegetation removal from the drainage systems along the segments between M50 junction 4 and M5 junction 8.

Dan Bothwick, the Project Manager at National Highways, explained the necessity of the maintenance work due to persistent flooding issues along the route. “We are aware of the flooding problems at certain points along this motorway, and we are initiating these repairs to enhance the drainage system across the entire length of the motorway,” he stated.
Bothwick added, “The project is substantial and while we understand it will disrupt traffic and the local community, we are planning to conduct most of the work during nighttime hours to minimize inconvenience. Upon completion, the improved drainage will provide a safer and more reliable roadway for all users.”
The work is set to start on Monday, July 28, and is expected to continue in phases until April of the following year to lessen the impact on daily traffic.
For motorists, a diversion route will be established during the road closures to help manage traffic flow and minimize disruptions. The agency also plans to use these closures to perform other necessary maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, barrier repairs, and signage cleaning to maximize efficiency and reduce the need for future road closures.
National Highways has scheduled several closures of the motorway throughout the year starting in August. The agency is committed to minimizing the impact on the community and travelers and will attempt to adhere to the schedule. However, they have advised that unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may necessitate changes.
During these closures, motorists are advised to follow the posted diversion routes to avoid delays and congestion.
Detailed Schedule of Upcoming Motorway Closures:
The planned closures for maintenance are as follows:
- From Thursday, August 14 to Tuesday, August 19 – complete closure westbound from M5 junction 8 to M50 junction 2.
- From Wednesday, August 20 to Wednesday, August 27 – complete closure eastbound between M50 junction 2 and M5 junction 8, excluding the bank holiday on Monday, August 25.
- And other scheduled closures continuing through early 2026, ensuring motorists are aware and can plan their routes accordingly.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about closure dates and to plan their travel schedules around these essential maintenance works to ensure a smoother and safer driving experience on the M50 motorway.
