In the publication ‘Skin Matters’ by Hada Labo Tokyo, it was found that the average woman scores her skin at just five out of ten.


How can this issue be addressed? A dermatologist and skincare expert suggests the solution lies in choosing products with the right ingredients.

Dr. Janine David, a GP specializing in women’s health, emphasized, “A dedicated skincare routine that incorporates a variety of scientifically supported ingredients can significantly transform your skin, making it appear more youthful, radiant, firm, and hydrated.”

She highlighted four potent ingredients that are crucial for skin care, encouraging women to seek out products containing hyaluronic acid, collagen, retinol, and panthenol.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid, a vital skincare component known for its ability to bind and retain water molecules, is essential for slowing the ageing process and providing deep hydration, according to Dr. Janine.

Another skin expert, Dr. Nisa Aslam, cautioned that insufficient levels of hyaluronic acid could lead to premature signs of ageing such as wrinkles, dryness, and fine lines.

She stressed the importance of topical application, especially as natural levels of hyaluronic acid decrease with age. Dr. Janine recommended using acetylated sodium hyaluronate, also known as super hyaluronic acid, for enhanced penetration into skin layers and effective anti-wrinkle results within just 28 days.

Collagen

Collagen, which provides structure and elasticity to the skin, is synthesized by cells deep within the dermis, explained Dr. David. Unfortunately, our ability to produce collagen diminishes annually by approximately 1-1.5% starting from the age of 25.

External factors such as pollution, smoking, UV radiation, and other environmental stressors can further reduce collagen levels. However, studies have shown that topical collagen applications can increase skin levels, effectively countering oxidative stress associated with skin ageing.

Moreover, consuming collagen has been advocated by a nutritionist who credits it as her “secret” to maintaining a youthful appearance, noting significant improvements in her skin since incorporating it into her diet.

Retinol aids in improving signs of ageing by accelerating the renewal of skin cells

Retinol, known for its ability to enhance the skin’s cell renewal process, has been proven to effectively improve signs of ageing, as stated by Dr. David.

Research conducted by Which? demonstrated that using retinol for a duration of 12 weeks can significantly reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation.

Panthenol

Panthenol, a vitamin B5 derivative, is another essential ingredient highlighted by Dr. David for achieving a youthful skin appearance. It acts by trapping moisture within the skin, effectively reducing water loss and helping to restore the skin barrier.

She further explained that panthenol not only enhances skin elasticity but also boosts the absorption rates of other active ingredients in skincare products.

Active ingredients, or ‘actives’, are specific components in skincare products that target particular skin concerns, such as acne, hyperpigmentation, and signs of ageing, as explained by La Roche-Posay.

“These scientifically validated ingredients are crucial for the product to perform its intended function, and you’ll find them in products like anti-ageing creams, acne treatments, and hydrating serums,” added the experts.
