Drivers in Greater Manchester woke to major disruption as a police-led operation forced the shutdown of the M60 between junctions 6 and 8. Emergency teams are on the scene and motorists should expect long delays while authorities manage the situation.
M60 closed after police response — what we know
Greater Manchester Police has confirmed officers are responding to a welfare concern on the M60. The carriageway is closed in both directions between J6 (Sale) and J8 (Stretford) while the incident is handled.
National Highways said it cannot yet provide a reopening time. Traffic authorities warn of delays of at least two hours in both directions and urge drivers to plan alternative journeys.
Wider traffic impact across the region
Traffic-monitoring tools show heavy congestion spreading across the local network. Slow or stationary traffic currently stretches toward Ashton-under-Lyne and Bolton.
- Road network sensors report long queues on feeder roads.
- Sat-nav detours are adding journey time for many drivers.
- Expect ripple effects on peak-time commuter routes.
Public transport affected: buses and Metrolink
Manchester’s Bee Network has warned of significant hold-ups on routes between Sale and Carrington. Average delays of around 40 minutes have been reported for some services.
To ease disruption, selected Metrolink services are accepting bus tickets. The Bee Network apologised for the inconvenience and advised passengers to allow extra travel time.
Official diversion plans for motorists
National Highways has published temporary diversion instructions. Follow road signs showing the hollow square and hollow circle symbols to rejoin the M60.
Clockwise diversion (follow hollow square)
- Leave M60 clockwise at J6 via the Carrington Spur (approx 1.4 km).
- At the J7/A56 junction, head south on A56 Cross Street for about 2.2 km.
- Turn onto A6144 (Harboro Road) westbound for roughly 2.4 km.
- Rejoin A6144 (Carrington Spur) northbound for about 1.9 km.
- At the A6144/M60 J8 roundabout, take the first exit to return to the M60 clockwise.
Anti-clockwise diversion (follow hollow square / hollow circle)
- Exit M60 anti-clockwise at J8.
- At the J8/A6144 roundabout take the A6144 south (Carrington Spur).
- Follow A6144 (Carrington Lane) and continue east at the A6144/A56 junction.
- Stay on A6144 for around two miles, then use the M60 J6 roundabout to rejoin anti-clockwise.
