Drivers issued urgent traffic warning as serious accidents prompt police to shut major roads

Motorists across Leicestershire and Lincolnshire are facing major delays after two serious crashes forced police to close key routes this morning. Emergency services remain at the scenes, and authorities have issued detailed diversion instructions as investigations continue.

A46 in Leicestershire: crash, fire and full closure

Police and highways teams have shut the A46 both ways between the A50 at Groby and the M1 junction 21A. The closure follows a serious collision that sparked a vehicle fire shortly before 4:45am.

Leicestershire Police are leading the response and have launched formal collision inquiries. Nearby junctions are congested as traffic is held and checked.

How drivers should reroute around the A46 closure

National Highways has published clear diversion routes. Follow the signs and symbols shown on-road.

Southbound traffic (follow the Hollow Diamond)

  • From the A46/A50 junction, take the fourth exit onto the A50 north (Markfield Road).
  • Continue through Lena Drive, Bradgate Hill and Field Head roundabout to the A50/M1 J22 interchange.
  • At the interchange take the first exit and head south on the M1 to J21A, where you can rejoin the A46.

Northbound traffic (follow the Solid Diamond)

  • From M1 J21A, stay on the M1 northbound to J22.
  • At J22, turn right onto the A50 eastbound, passing Field Head, Bradgate Hill and Lena Drive.
  • Follow to the A50/A46 Groby interchange and rejoin the A46 northbound.

A160 closed in Lincolnshire after separate serious collision

Humberside Police are investigating a collision on East Halton Road, near Habrough Roundabout. The A160 eastbound is closed between the A180 at Ulceby and the A1077 at South Killingholme.

A section of Habrough Roundabout has also been closed while officers carry out enquiries. National Highways says this incident lies just off their network but is causing long delays.

Official diversion for the A160 eastbound closure

Drivers are asked to follow the hollow square diversion symbol where displayed.

  • Continue east past Brocklesby interchange on the A180 for about three miles to Stallingborough Junction.
  • Exit the A180 at Stallingborough Junction and take the exit onto the A1173.
  • Follow the A1173 for roughly three miles to the A160 at Manby roundabout.
  • Take the first exit onto the A160 and drive one mile to Habrough Roundabout.
  • At Habrough, take the fifth exit to rejoin the A160 eastbound.

Practical advice from National Highways and police

Expect delays if your route includes these stretches. Officers advise allowing extra journey time.

  • Plan ahead and check live traffic updates before you travel.
  • Where possible, delay non-essential trips until roads reopen.
  • Follow official diversion signage and any directions from officers at the scene.

Emergency services remain on site and investigators are working to establish the full circumstances of both collisions. Drivers should exercise patience and drive carefully through diversion routes.
